Amphotericin-B is used to treat Mucormycosis, also known as Black Fungus, which damages the nose, eyes, sinuses, and sometimes even the brain.Amphotericin B is an antifungal medication. This medicine is used to treat or prevent fungal infections including aspergillosis and candidiasis.Patients receiving amphotericin B may have regular blood draws to check electrolyte levels in the blood and monitor liver and kidney function.



Five drug makers have received approval to produce Amphotericin-B, the drug used in the treatment of mucormycosis and whose shortage is the latest worry for India with an increase in the number of people contracting the rare fungal infection.Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Natco Pharma, Gufic Biosciences, Alembic Pharmaceuticals and Lyca Pharmaceuticals have secured the new drug approval for producing it in the country. They got the approval within three days, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Mansukh Mandaviya said, assuring that the shortage of Amphotericin-B would get resolved soon.


Amphotericin B injection is usually infused (injected slowly) intravenously over a period of 2 to 6 hours once daily. Before you receive your first dose, you may receive a test dose over 20 to 30 minutes to see if you can tolerate the medication.Amphotericin B can be given intravenously, orally or topically. It is not absorbed at all after oral or topical administration and so this mode of delivery is simply for prophylaxis or the treatment of mucosal infection,Amphotericin B is an antibiotic used as the “gold standard” in the treatment of life-threatening fungal infections.

Major side effect of amphotericin B

Fever, shaking, chills, flushing, loss of appetite, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, shortness of breath, or fast breathing may occur 1 to 3 hours after the infusion is started.
